What is a Letter of Recommendation?

Wherever you are in your educational pathway, it is never too early to start thinking about those very important letters of recommendations! These are written references from someone who knows you that discusses your character and work ethic.
Why do you need a letter of recommendation? LORs can be helpful for students who are looking for a job, applying to college or graduate school, or preparing for an internship. In fact, many college and job applications require at least two letters of recommendation. They are incredibly powerful because they can tell stories about great things that you have done in ways that a typical application or resume cannot.
While it might be tempting to get your father’s friend’s cousin who knows somebody who is really important in their field, the probability that they can give a thoughtful analysis of your potential is slim. This is why some of the best LORs come from your teachers and counselors. You spend every day with your teacher and probably know your strengths and weaknesses very well.
