How to Make Tuition Affordable

It’s easy to be intimidated when you start looking at the price of tuition at different colleges and universities. But, your school’s publicized tuition and fees probably won’t include financial aid like scholarships, grants, subsidized student loans, and more. A little research about financial aid can go a long way in helping you pay for your education.
Here are just a few of the many possible sources for financial aid in New York. You should always check your school’s financial aid website or speak to your school’s advisers as they may have other programs, grants, or tools to help you pay for your education.
• New York State’s Grants, Scholarships and Awards: The TAP (Tuition Assistance Program), VTA (Veterans Tuition Awards), and Volunteer Recruitment Scholarships are just a few of the many grants and scholarship programs available in New York.
• Pell Grants: Federal Pell Grants were expanded this past year, and the maximum award is now $5,550 for a full time student. All you have to do is file your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)on time and meet the qualifications to receive a grant. Check out their website for more information on how much aid you can be awarded.
• GI Bill Benefits: If you are a veteran with at least 90 days of service on or after September 11, 2001, you could get a lot of help with your tuition, fees, and housing expenses at school. In some cases, all of your tuition could be paid by the VA. Check their website to determine how much benefits you can receive and the maximum the VA will pay.
There are many sources for financial aid out there to help you pay for school. Don’t let cost stop you from getting an education and achieving your dreams.
