Boys Basketball: Michigan Player Who Died After Winning Shot Had Enlarged Heart

A tragic story out of Michigan. Here’s the report from The Associated Press:

FENNVILLE, Mich. — A Michigan high school basketball player who died shortly after making a game-winning shot had an enlarged heart. The Ottawa County medical examiner says 16-year-old Wes Leonard suffered cardiac arrest because of the condition. An autopsy was conducted Friday. The teenager from Fennville High School was pronounced dead Thursday evening at a hospital in Holland. He scored the game-winning layup at the end of a perfect season for the small town near Lake Michigan. Leonard collapsed during a post-game celebration. Paramedics performed CPR on the 16-year-old before he was pronounced dead at Holland Hospital.

Performance Lags for Students With Hearing Impairments

Despite advances in technology and a greater emphasis on improving the academic performance of students with hearing impairments, these kids continue to have a more difficult time with reading, math, science and social studies, a new report from the National Center for Special Education Research concludes.

The report found that of students 13 to 19 with hearing impairments—a term they used instead of deaf or hard-of-hearing to match language in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004— 35 percent took all of their courses in general education classrooms, and regardless of their setting, most were given some type of accommodation, support, or service from their schools. Sun Sounds of AZ Fundraiser at Tempe Beach Park on Saturday

The 23rd annual Great Arizona Beer Festival is scheduled for Saturday, March 5 from 2 to 6 pm at Tempe Beach Park. The event is the largest of its kind in the southwest and features over 200 artisan beers, food vendors and live entertainment.

Wrestling: Bacon wins its first State Open title

  Bacon Academy won its first State Open title, edging Hand, 98-95, at the New Haven Athletic Center Saturday night.

   Bacon’s Aren Norman won the 189 pound championship with a 7-1 decision over Ben Ceci of Greenwich and his teammate Devin Covone won at 160, beating Dillon Carter of Hale-Ray, 2-1.

   It was the first time Danbury has not won the State Open title since the CIAC started keeping team scoring again in 2001. Ledyard won the last team title in 1975.

Dixie Heights 81, St. Henry 42, boys’ 34th District final

Dixie Heights scored the first eight points of the game and was never seriously challenged Friday night in an 81-42 win over St. Henry at the boys’ 34th District final Friday night at Dixie Heights High School.

It was the first 34th District title for Dixie Heights since 2008. St. Henry had beaten the Colonels in the final in each of the last two seasons.

“We just wanted to come out and prove that the 34th District is ours,” senior guard and tournament Most Valuable Player Matt Trammel said.
