You may recognize this California Virtual Academy high school student from the X Factor, a national singing competition to win a $5 million recording contract with Syco/Sony Music. Rachel is currently in the Top 10 and a crowd favorite. During one of her recent show performances, judge Simon Cowell compared her to one of this generations most popular artists – Beyonce! Money spent on prekindergarten a good investment, Memphis group says

Business executives in every sector of this city’s economy know times are tough. But they also say Memphis can’t afford status quo investment in early childhood education.

Armed with statistics, Memphis Tomorrow and the city and county mayor are pressing the legislature to ramp up investments in prekindergarten, with the goal of nearly doubling the allotment, said Blair Taylor, executive director of Memphis Tomorrow.

Todays Shelf Awareness for Readers newsletter includes a small news item on New Yorks Comic Con:

New York Comic Con, the East Coasts largest comic, graphic novel and manga festival, opens this Thursday at the Javits Center in New York City. Day one is restricted to industry professionals, press and VIP ticket holders. Fans can purchase tickets at the door on Friday or Sunday (Saturday-only tickets are already sold out) for $45. Modernized Electronic Filing Expected to Improve Tax Preparer Services

The IRS has phased in a modernized electronic filing system over the past two years, which is leading to big changes in 2012 for the tax preparation industry. Modernized e-File – known as MeF – is the newest IRS method for electronic processing of individual tax returns. The implementation of MeF has gradually replaced a legacy filing system.
