Veterans and Community Leaders Celebrate EVVEC Grand Opening

TEMPE – February 1, 2011 – Rio Salado College hosted a ribbon cutting to celebrate the grand opening of the East Valley Veterans Education Center in Tempe on Tuesday.

Speaking at the event, Rio Salado College President Chris Bustamante outlined the purpose of the center. It is our intent to serve those who have served us, Bustamante said. This center was designed to welcome veterans and to provide easy access to the information that they need to use their educational benefits at the Maricopa Community College of their choice

Univ. of Calif. raises tuition nearly 10 percent

SAN FRANCISCO – The University of California, one of the country’s largest and most respected higher education systems, raised tuition Thursday by another 9.6 percent for the upcoming school year in response to a sharp reduction in government support.

The $1,068 hike passed by the Board of Regents came on top of a previously approved 8 percent hike for 2011-2012.

Incoming UCLA junior Alex Jreisat, who is transferring from a community college, said the latest increase will force him and other students to borrow more money and go deeper into debt.

“It’s already putting me in an uncomfortable situation financially,” said Jreisat, a 21-year-old anthropology major who traveled to San Francisco to speak at the board meeting. “

Employee Spotlight: Matthew Budwill

Matthew Budwill is a mild mannered system administrator by day, but in his free time hes an adventure seeking storm chaser!
The Rio Salado College employee has been chasing storms in Arizona and across the country for the last 15 years. He started out as an amateur doing time-lapse photography at night and has evolved through both training and experience into a certified SKYWARN spotter.
I kind of stumbled across it, Budwill said. It just started out through my photography doing time-lapse at night. Over the years Ive amassed more training and now storm chasing is what I do. Read more…
