University of Memphis ends porn tape investigation

When an adult video surfaced on WorldStarHipHop.com this week showing a woman leaving the University Center, the student center at the University of Memphis, wearing a U of M sweatshirt, a black baseball cap and Daisy Duke-style denim shorts, the university launched an investigation into whether she was a student.

That investigation consisted of typing a name that appeared on the video, “April Pratt,” into the student directory. No results. Then, said Sheryl Lipman, a university lawyer, her face was shown “to some people on the academic side of things.” Whoever those few people were — Lipman wouldn’t say Thursday — they were unable to recognize the woman out of the 23,000-member student body.

The video, posted Monday, already has already been viewed more than one million times.

Shep Students Receive Major District Honours

Some incredible Ross Sheppard students were honoured by Edmonton Public Schools last night at the District Student Awards ceremony celebrating student excellence for 2010-2011.

The major award winners from Ross Sheppard were Nate Gartke, who won the International Languages Award, and Ashneil Dutt & Amanda Fremmerlid, who separately won 2 of the 4 Career & Technology Studies Awards. Also honoured were Brittany Lissina (Michael A. Strembitsky Nominee), Jacob Garber & Laura Jones (Top Academic Grade 10 for Ross Sheppard), and Carey Poon (Top Academic Grade 11 for Ross Sheppard).

Star Tribune’s Hertzel Delights Audience at GLA Author Day

Star Tribune Books Editor Laurie Hertzel spoke to an audience of approximately 100 people at the Edina County Club on Tuesday, Oct. 18 as part of Gustavus Library Associates’ Fall Author Day.

Hertzel spoke about her unorthodox journey in the field of journalism, which included a variety of positions during a 20-year stint at the Duluth News-Tribune, a short stint with Minnesota Monthly magazine, and finally to her current position at the Star Tribune, the largest newspaper in the state of Minnesota.

She read several colorful stories from her new, award-winning memoir News to Me: Adventures of an Accidental Journalist. A

Anthropologist studies role of cyber-insecurity in war

What would prompt a college student to want to toss his cell phone in the trash?

New research by Carolyn Nordstrom, known as a pioneer in the anthropology of war and peace, was powerful enough to do just that.

Delivering Colgate’s third annual Schaehrer Memorial Lecture, sponsored by Colgate’s Peace and Conflict Studies Program (P-CON), Nordstrom addressed the role of technology in conflict from unexpected angles, informed by what P-CON director Nancy Ries called “an anthropologist’s sensitivity to the way that technical, moral, and existential perceptions combine to create a vision of the future.”

P-CON major Dave Esber ’11 was moved.
